Convenience creates distraction.
Mar 18, 2022In the world we live in today, things are quick and easy.
Microwave meals, drive-throughs, UberEats delivery, dating via an app, Netflix series' that can be watched in a day. Everything is at our fingertips. We don't even pick up our phones anymore to play music, we let Alexa do it instead. Our lives are steeped in convenience. Many of us believe that we need all this convenience because we don't have the time. Minimalism has taught me that's just not true. It's not that we don't have time, we haven't defined our priorities.
How are you filling your time?
Are you working around the clock for your 9 to 5? Why? Which is more important, your job or your family?
Are you watching hours and hours of television a week while your health goals slip through the cracks? Is catching up on the latest show more important than your health?
If we are willing to create a little inconvenience, we can substantially shift our mindset and change our habits.
I've found this to ring the most true in my living room space. I was losing a significant amount of time watching television. With this realization, I decided to test myself. Let's cut the cable and let someone hold the television just for a bit.
2 years later, I hadn't looked back, but then I moved in with my Dad. He still had cable and a huge 60" television. I thought I could maintain not watching television, but eventually, I gave in. Next thing I knew, I was re-watching 90210 - I completed 9 seasons before I snapped back into who I was.
This improved my sleep patterns, time spent working on the business, working out and having fun on the weekends.
I put at least 10 to 12 hours back into my week.
- Cut the cable - make it harder to watch your favorite television show & focus on your hobbies
- Cash instead of card (or leaving the card at home) - making smarter more intentional choices with money
- No microwaving - prep fresh meals and make time for meal preparation
- Doing one thing at a time - get your focus back
- Download an app that blocks app usage
- No drive-thru's for a week or no eating out
- Unplugging the television
- Tossing out makeup - taking care of and getting comfortable in your skin
- Letting go of wigs, weaves - taking care of your own hair and learning how to manage it
- Remove apps that can be used on a laptop
- Charge your phone in another room or on the other side of the room - get more sleep
What convenience do you need to let go?
